Emotional Signs

The most prevalent sign is irritation and a shortened temper. Related to this are moodiness and a feeling of being overwhelmed by the problem. A lot of people feel lonely, depressed and angry.

Behavioral Signs

People who are stressed get affected by eating disorders (consuming less or more). Some individuals end up sleeping more (or trying to sleep more), while others are unable to get any sleep. There is a tendency to withdraw from social circles. In more serious cases, the person turns to alcohol or drugs as a means for coping with the problem.

Causes of Stress

After recognizing the symptoms of stress, finding out the cause is the next step. Stress inducers are called stressors. They are divided into external and internal types. The external stressors include relationship and family problems and difficulties related to work. Other external stressors are raising children and financial troubles.

Common internal stressors are pessimism, inability to assert themselves and being filled with negativity. Other signs are expecting unrealistic solutions to problems and being self critical.

What is Stressful for Some isn’t for Others

Some people find early morning traffic irritating because it means they’ll be late for work. Others don’t mind because they can listen to music or call a friend. Some students are excited about going to college while others are concerned about the difficulties that lie ahead.

One person will be thankful for getting a promotion while another will worry about the additional responsibilities it entails. In other words, symptoms of stress for some are a source of enjoyment for others.

How to Cope with Stress

Determine what is causing your anxiety. If it’s work, organize your schedule so you can better perform your duties. If it’s raising kids, talk with your partner so you can help each other.

Relaxation Techniques

Learning to relax is imperative. For some, it can be as simple as having a cup of coffee with a friend. Others prefer to take a walk alone or exercise. Don’t dwell in negative thoughts. Practice yoga and deep breathing. Running and exercising may also help. Getting yourself in shape promotes a feeling of well being.

Symptoms of stress range from eating disorders to being irritable. If you feel any of the symptoms, try any of the relaxation techniques mentioned above.
